Excitement for Hindi painful: Mamata’s Hindi Diwas tweet ahead of Bhabanipur bypoll irks supporters

WHAT?

Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee has sent out a message wishing her followers on Hindi Diwas, however, this has ended up displeasing many of her supporters in West Bengal.

WHO?

Not just her supporters, even the Opposition has hit out at Mamata Banerjee over the Hindi Diwas tweet. CPIM leader Dipsita Dhar, who also contested the state assembly polls, wrote, “Why should I celebrate Hindi Divas? Is there a Bangla Divas? Tamil Divas? Malayalam Divas? Hindi is a beautiful language, I speak Hindi when wanted, but can’t bow down to hindi supremacy. Not now, not ever.”

WHY?

Located in south Kolkata, Bhabanipur is one of Kolkata’s oldest localities with a substantial non-Bengali vote base. With a mixed demography, the seat comprises Gujarati, Marwari and Punjabi-speaking voters apart from Bengalis.
