WHAT?

The Sports Ministry on Wednesday, January 18 sought an explanation from the Wrestling Federation of India after Olympic wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, protested against the functioning of the WFI.

WHEN?

The Sports Ministry has set a 72-hour deadline for a response from the WFI, adding that it would initiate action against the governing body of wrestling.

WHY?

Top wrestlers like Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia staged a protest with 29 other wrestlers in New Delhi. Vinesh, an Asian Games and Commonwealth Games gold medalist, alleged that Brij Bushan Sharan Singh and some other coaches had been sexually harassing female wrestlers, especially during training camps in Lucknow.

Vinesh also said she has contemplated suicide due to the treatment meted out to her by the WFI president, who is also a BJP MP from UP. Brij Bushan Sharan Singh, however, denied all allegations, saying he would hang himself if any of the wrestlers come forward and confirm Vinesh's claims.
